Ambassadors of CHRISTmas

My wife is in charge of writing and directing the school Christmas play where she teaches. Like last year she asked me to provide the artwork for the program cover. I don't know what I was thinking, but I tried all kinds of approaches and came up with this design.

I used colored pencils, collage, and Photoshop to put all the elements together. However, even though an interesting approach, without properly planning out my design, I came up with a clumsy looking illustration were the colors and element appear unrelated.
This next design is more of a success because I took more time to plan out my technique and color scheme. It is actually a simple design, but even the simplest idea can be unsuccessful if an artist doesn't take time to think out the process of the illustration.

My wife gave me the thumbs-up for this design and I can hardly wait to see it in print. Hey, I can hardly wait to see the play, especially since the son is in it too.

Created with watercolor and pen & ink.

Great job! I think you're right, that it is important to always consider the color and composition. This is improved over the last one!

I agree that the second is better, but you learned some important lessons from the first. That is always good. Good work.

Nicely done and it was great to take a peek into your process.
