Abstract #1

I have decided to start an ongoing series of abstract paintings. For a long time I have wanted to do something like this and so I am very excited to finally get it going. I really enjoy working with non-objective concepts because I find it captures the essence of what I am trying to visually express in a way that representational imagery is limited. I know this is probably cliche, but working in this manner is like composing music, except that I am working with visual media rather than sound.

I think I have been reluctant in the past to work in this way because of the fear of being judged harshly. It seems that even though non-objective abstract painting has been around for a long time, people still have misconceptions about it. However, I am to the point in my artistic career that I don't have the energy to care about being judged, and that I just have to do what I have to do.

Here is the first painting, Abstract #1 (I know, pretty boring title. I'll change it later after I have thought about it more). Done with acrylic and gesso on canvas. Dimensions are 6 inches by 5 feet.

This is so unique! What made you decided on those dimensions? I like the colors and the flow of this piece. nancy

Thanks Nancy. I'm not quite sure why I chose the dimensions. I think I like the idea of working in challenging formats, something that really stretches the boundaries that I tend to put on myself.

You're right. That size is really unique. The process is going to be a stimulating challenge. Looking forward to seeing more.

Love the color combination, and I love the dimensions even more. ^^ Definitely a headturner!

thats really neat, and the dimensions is really different and that just adds more to the feeling of the flow in whole, and the title is fine or just leave it untitled and let the minds play with it when they view it. great work, I love abstract painting, its therapy to me when I take a break from my normal everyday painting.

I know it's an abstract but I sure feel like I am looking through a narrow canyon opening to the starry night beyond. Where are you going to hang this? I'd love to see it in a setting with it's unusual proportions. I like it a lot but I understand how it's worrisome to do an abstract and be judged. I told my son a while back that abstracts to me are like his classical music to him and poetry is to my sister so I agree totally with you here.

Freebird, Not quite surt where I am going to hang it. I actually want to enter pieces from this series in to several art shows in my local area. I told my son that abstracts are like having a cake with just the frosting.
