Illustration Friday: Journey

The journey of an artist is often met with a lot of nay-sayers. Unfortunately, this has been my experience, especially as a youth. Fortunately, I had a lot of encouragement from my teachers and professors. Still, it's a rough road when others who don't understand art or the art world are discouraging.

This illustration was created with watercolor and pen/ink on Canson XL Mix Media paper. This paper is some of the cruddiest stuff I've worked with. Canson says it's for acrylic, watercolor, pen and pencil, but it is horrible to work on with my media of choice. Ink lines fan out on the surface giving poor line quality, India ink drys lightly, and watercolors are difficult to lighten and adjust once on the paper.

Artists looking for a good paper beware of this brand. It will only frustrate. It's not worth the cheaper price.

Love the idea David and I am sure it will chime with many people's experience. Nice work.

I have had similar experiences - both with naysayers and Canson mixed media paper. Boo to them both!

I'm not a fan of canson either. My first sketch/watercolor notebook was canson paper. It seems like it's always worth it to get good paper! I do like how your sketch turned out, though.
