Illustration Friday: Lesson

I decided to do a sequential set of illustrations for this week's topic. When I read the topic I thought of a scene in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and thought it would be a good challenge to try to illustrate it. Well it was definitely a challenge. I worked all day on it and into the evening.
My method of working was a little different than the typical comic book approach. I drew out everything out as preliminary sketches first on separate sheets of paper. However, instead of drawing construction lines on my illustration paper, I painted directly to the paper. I simply used my preliminary sketches as a guide for the finished illustrations. After the paint dried, I added ink with a brush, then I did the panel lines and letters. This is a pretty backwards way of creating sequential illustrations, but I found it to be a rather quick way to work. I hope to do more of this type of work in the future.

Created with watercolor, brush/pen & ink on cold pressed watercolor paper.
