Daily Sketch 37

Our sleeping dog. She was finally still, if but only for a moment.

Daily Sketch 36

Here is a sketch of our minister giving the message. I had to be fast because I also sing throughout the time of worship, and so when he is done speaking I have to go up on stage with the other singers. This is where not being able to erase doesn't really apply because there is no time to do it. A closer look at certain details will show that I sometimes draw transparently, then use rendering techniques to develop form and hide the transparency of shapes and objects (but not always).

Daily Sketch 35

Here's a sketch that I did of my son as we watched a video. He is wearing his new red sweat jacket which is fleece lined. He likes it so much that he wanted to wear it to bed last night and he wore it almost all day today. So naturally I had to color my sketch to show the color of his jacket.

Daily Sketch 34

I made a drawing of our smaller cat Samantha. Out of all our animals she is the lowest maintenance and very easy-going.

Daily Sketch 33

At the wife's parents' house for Thanksgiving. Sister-in-law did much of the cooking. Good time with the family.
There were more people in this scene but they all moved so much I couldn't get them all. Of course they didn't know I was drawing them, and if they did they probably would have stayed in the other room.

Color Experimentation

After reading some suggestions, I decided to add some color to yesterday's Daily Sketch. Though not quite "Matisse" in its color scheme, I think it still has a Fauve-like quality to it.

Daily Sketch 32

Started this drawing out as a doodle. Then one thing led to another and a face emerged. This is a different drawing style for me. It sort of reminds me of Picasso or Matisse, both artists whose work I greatly admire.

Daily Sketch 31

We took the dog to Applehill today. The weather was beautiful, and since it was during the weekday, there was hardly a crowd. Though I brought my sketchbook I didn't do any drawing while I was there. Sometimes it is just too difficult to spend time with family and make time for art on a trip. Good thing I brought my camera. Though it is not the same experience, sometimes it is good to get a camera's perception on a scene. It will occasionally catch details that I miss when I'm caught up with trying to capture an image from life.

EDM 250 - Draw something free.
The ultimate sacrifice was paid on the cross and freely given to humankind so that we can be right with God. The best freebie of all. Definitely something for which to be thankful during this Thanksgiving season.
Note: Some scholars believe that when a person was nailed to a cross that the nails were driven through the wrists because the hands could not support the weight of the body. That is why I depicted the crucifixion in this way (though I have depicted in the more familiar way in other pieces).

Here is yet another drawing of our minister. Boy, was he animated today! I thought it was challenging to draw the dog!

Daily Sketch 28

We rented a movie called The Reading Room from Netflix. James Earl Jones was the main character. The movie was a little slow but worth watching. I drew Jones as I watched the show.

Daily Sketch 27

More old men. Actually, it is three views of the same imaginary guy. This picture is just a little shy of being a nude figurative drawing. I feel hesitant to publish something like that on my blog because I don't want to offend anyone.
Why is it that the human figure is so offensive or obscene in our society? I see the human body, especially in art, as poetry. Whether "pretty" or "ugly", when I draw the human figure it is like creating music. I wonder how I could express that concept artistically.

Here's EDM 248 - Draw a lock. Drawn from memory/imagination. I concentrated on line quality, similar to that of mechanical drafting. I always wondered why drafters draw thicker outlines of objects. Perhaps it is a framing device of sorts.

Daily Sketch 25

Here's one of the sick boy again. He finally got an appetite by this evening, though he had a little bit of broth for lunch. I fixed his favorite soup which is potato soup.

Daily Sketch 24

Four days ago I thought the son just had a cold and that he would get over it in a day or so. Today we had to take him to the doctor for an ear infection. We also found out that his ear drum has a perforation from the pressure of fluid. Ouch! This is a sketch of the son sleeping on the couch with dog at feet. He slept all day.

Daily Sketch 23

Worked in a smaller sized 3 1/2" x 5 1/2" Moleskine sketchbook today. It is a bit of a challenge for me to draw at such a small scale compared to what I am used to. I decided to "cheat" an work on a spread so I had 5 1/2" x 7" to work on. This sketch was done at Rubio's which is starting to be one of my favorite places to eat.

Drawn with graphite and a splash of lemonade (our server accidentally spilled my drink as I was drawing).

Daily Sketch 22

On today's drawing from our Sunday morning class I decided not to focus on our minister, instead focusing on two women. The drawing looks nothing like them. However, sometimes the act of drawing is more important than the final result or representational likeness.

Daily Sketch 21

Sometimes when I run out of picture ideas I draw old men. Nothing deep or Freudian about it, they are just fun to draw. Maybe it is a foreshadowing of how I may look some day.

Daily Sketch 20

Here is one of the son watching TV. Poor boy. He had to stay home from school today because he has a cold. Not the worst thing in the world, but I still feel bad for him. He pretty much relaxed all day watching DVDs. We also watched an old classic via Netflix, the 1931 version of Dracula with Bella Lugosi. He thought it was OK.

Daily Sketch 19

Swamped today with my son's class field trip, an afterschool art class to teach, and an evening Bible study to go to. Still, not too busy to at least do a simple contour drawing of my hand.

Daily Sketch 17

This drawing is a study for this week's Illustration Friday topic "Blur". I like it when rendering a picture gets to the point where form is manipulated like clay. It reminds me of the etching process where numerous states show the process and metamorphosis of the print.
This is not exactly what I was envisioning for the final illustration. I am thinking about doing a monotype print for the final piece.

I just made this drawing up as I went. I started out with hatching and cross hatching, forming the face in the foreground. Contour lines were added after the fact.

Daily Sketch 14

Here's Mr. Frodo our cat. Our pets make it into a lot of my drawings. Mr. Frodo is still adjusting to our new dog. Being the alpha cat of the house, he's having to learn to deal with the dog's highly positive and active behavior.

Daily Sketch 13

I sketched this as we were watching a TV show. The coffee mug is part of a set that I got my wife for her birthday. It's from World Market. We love going there because there is always something interesting to look at.

Daily Sketch 9 - EDM 247

Here's my take on EDM247 "Draw something creepy". Some guys hanging out in a shopping center parking lot, one of them dressed in his Halloween costume wearing nothing but a diaper, sunglasses, flip flops, and a cigarette in his hand. TMI! Some things just weren't meant to be seen (and here I am sharing it on the Internet).

Drawn from the best of my recollection with brush/pen and ink.

Daily Sketch 8

Another sketch from the Sunday class. The class is on the apostle Paul's book to the Galatian church. Very good study. I think our modern society gives Paul a bad rap. Because of some of his writings (taken out of context) he has been labeled chauvinistic. However, a closer examination of his writing will find non-sexist (and non-racist)views that were really ahead of the times in the first century. In some ways, depending on the part of the world, his views are ahead of our times. I think Paul's teachings lay some of the ground work for equal rights for all people in society. It makes me wonder why today's church is not more proactive when it comes to such issues.
I started this drawing on our minister's arm and hand in pocket, and somehow that threw off some of the proportions. In fact, as I look at the rest of the drawing I find all kinds of things out of whack. Nevertheless, I like how it turned out as I am not always concerned with the final product but enjoy the process of the drawing experience.
