After drawing the preliminary drawing, I wanted to tighten the accuracy of the proportions of the dessert bowl, so I used an actual bowl for a model, and in addition to that, I took several photos of it from different angles to offer different perspectives. I often like using black and white photos because color can sometimes be a distracting element when used as a reference.
For the next step, using my sketch, model, and photo as reference, I drew a light layout of the design with a 4H pencil. This is a really poor pic because 4H lead is really difficult to reproduce, which is why I use it. I really had to finagle the contrast on my photo editor to get it to be visible.
Over the pencil, I approached the picture like a traditional watercolor painting, starting with loose, light washes of color.
The laying down of layers of color was pretty straight forward.

A little bit more ... and ...
Done! Often I like to take a watercolor almost to the point of finishing strokes and then I switch to pen and ink for added punch to the piece. I use the two mediums together because I like both drawing and painting. Many illustrators that I admire combine the two mediums.
The title of this piece is Dessert/Desert, which is a play on words because many (including me) forget which spelling is correct to its respective meaning. I'll probably forget how to spell it after today!

Great concept illustration for the challenge. I love the idea and your finished result. It is very clever as Nanke said. :) Only thing I see that nags at me is the perspective of your dessert bowl in comparison to the base. I mean, the drawing works as is, and it could just be because I am so literal, but the ellipse for for bowl should match the ellipse for the base. But, that's a minor compared to the finished piece. The colors are awesome and I do love the use of the pen to give it that finishing touch. Very nicely done. :)
